English as Lingua Franca

 What is English as a Lingua Franca?

  English as a lingua franca is a contact language among speakers from different first languages. English as a lingua franca refers to the use of English by non-native speakers as a language of choice. While English does have some competitive advantages over many other languages in terms of ease of adoption, they are not the main reason English has become the global language. 

   

Historical reasons: 

    English is still used institutionally because of the legacy of British or American imperialism.
The British Empire played a significant role in spreading the English language worldwide, as it colonized around a quarter of the planet, and English became the default language in many locations around the world for all forms of communication. 

International political reason: 

    English provides a neutral means of communication between the different ethnic groups of a country and may be seen as a symbol of national unity or emerging statehood. English can provide a neutral means of communication between different ethnic groups of a country and may be seen as a symbol of national unity or emerging statehood. It can represent the national identity of a country, be a unifying factor, allow for neutral communication, and contribute to national development.

Practical reason: 

    English is the language of international air traffic control, international tourism, international business and academic. 

External economic: 

Reasons: The USA's dominant economic position often acts as a magnet for international
business and trade

Intellectual reason:

    Most of the scientific, technological, and academic information in the world is expressed in English. English is the gateway to Western culture.

Entertainment reasons:

    English is the main language of popular music, TV, computers, and video games. Personal advantage/prestige: Proficiency in English is often perceived as conferring higher status.

Study Abroad

 Study Abroad              In the last week, I took part in Zoom with speaker Alfian. On Zoom we discussed his experiences and efforts to study abroad in Korea. he said that he had taken the IELTS test 3 times and spent around 9 million rupiah. However, his IELTS score did not reach the target. Sis Alfian intends to raise the money again to try the IELTS test and this motivates me not to give up easily. Brother Alfian also said that he was able to study abroad in Korea because he received a scholarship from POSCO. However, he only studied abroad for a short time because if he wanted to continue studying abroad, he would spend more money, whereas what Brother Alfian wanted was to study abroad with a full scholarship so that he wants to take IELTS test again.
